Cabinet Reshuffle: Surprises in Mugabe’s New Lineup

Harare – Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe has made another cabinet reshuffle that has discarded trusted lieutenants.

The major loser is Simbarashe Mumbengegwi, who surrendered the Foreign Affairs portfolio to blue eyed, Masvingo boy, Engineer Walter Mzembi, who ran the tourism ministry before.
Mbengegwi will oversee a lesser macroeconomic ministry.

Past Home Affairs Minister, Ignatius Chombo assumed the Finance portfolio, previously held by embattled Patrick Chinamasa, relegated to a junior post in the newly-created Cyber Security portfolio.

Former intelligence boss, Happington Bonyogwe takes over the legal ministry, previously trusted to Vice President, Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Simon Khaya Moyo, the Zanu PF party spokesperson bounces back as the minister of communications, taking over from Christopher Mushowe, now a minister in the President’s office.

Another returnee, Cain Mathema assumes the volatile War Veterans ministry, which has seen three ministers in a short time.

The latest reshuffle comes as the party shows signs of fissures, while continued mudslinging persists marching towards the watershed 2018 elections.

According to the country constitution, Mugabe has the prerogative to reorganise cabinet.
