Doctor Khumalo: 'Playing Against Chiefs was Strange'

Johannesburg - Former Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach and Amakhosi legend, Doctor Khumalo, has spoken about his experience on facing his former side last weekend.

Khumalo was unveiled as Baroka FC’s new Technical Director in August this year, shortly after parting ways with Chiefs.

Amakhosi hosted Baroka at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday, September 30, where they suffered a 2-1 loss to the high-flying Baroka side.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Soccer Laduma, Khumalo opened up about coming up against his former side.

“Err… I must say it was a strange feeling because I never thought I’d one day find myself sitting in the opposition box. Before the start of the game, it was so weird and felt awkward.

“The game started and the reality hit home that it was time to do the business and I knew I wasn’t dreaming that I was on the other side,” the 50-year-old revealed.

Khumalo then went on to reveal the emotion he felt when he received a warm welcome from the Amakhosi faithful, despite no longer being with the club.

“It was really strange because we’re talking about me looking at the people who have supported me throughout my career and we go into battle with them.

“That can be very emotional because they are all I know or had, until recently, and the way they received me was so unbelievable. You could tell ukuthi (that) people really appreciated me,” he said. - Soccer Laduma
